Sitting bull, leader of the Hunpapa Sioux, was a shaman who was against white settlers moving into territory considered to belong to Native Americans. He fought and led the Sioux and Cheyenne in the Battle of Little Big Horn. Sitting Bull then fled, with others, to Canada, eventually surrendering to the United States. He continued to practice the Ghost Dance, an outlawed Native American tradition. He died trying to resist arrest for this practice.
